Routine filter house inspections are essential to preserve the performance of your gas turbine system. Performing regular filter house inspections will also help minimize downtime and unexpected outages. However, for a filter house inspection to be effective it must be thorough and should include several main components designed to protect and enhance the turbine system.

The main components of a thorough filter house inspection will include attention to each of the following:

  • Debris
  • Loose debris in the filter house can adversely affect the function of the system. It may also be symptomatic of a larger problem that needs to be discovered and addressed before it escalates. The filter house inspection should check for debris located on the floors, walls, and ledges, as well as in cracks, seams, and corners, and around the filter openings themselves.

  • Painted surfaces
  • Maintaining the integrity of painted surfaces is a crucial safeguard against rust and corrosion which, if left unchecked, can create structural or mechanical damage. As such during the filter house inspection all painted surfaces should be carefully examined for signs of bubbling, cracking or pealing which can be a sign of significant corrosion beneath the surface. Letting these non conformances go unchecked for long periods of time can create the potential for critical component failure.

  • Air Leaks
  • Air leaks can significantly impinge on the overall efficiency of the system. A proper filter house inspection will detect any such leaks and recommend the best way to seal them.

  • Filter Installation
  • To protect the system it is imperative that the filter be properly installed and showing no signs of damage. Thus, during the filter house inspection the filter should be visually inspected to ensure proper yolk and clip assembly. Signs of corrosion, broken filter clamps, and other damage are additional markers of improper compression or other more serious problems requiring immediate attention.

  • Joints
  • The systems joints are among the most vulnerable to wear and tear. During the filter house inspection all joints should be checked for cleanliness and to ensure that they do not need resealing or replacement gaskets.

  • Water
  • The presence of loose water on the floor of the inlet house is a clear indication of a leak. Such leaks can also be spotted from the presence of leak paths or other water staining. The source of the leak must be found and rectified and the situation should be closely monitored.

  • Contaminants
  • Contaminants on the clean side of the filter house are a big red flag since these contaminants are then likely to flow downstream and create a host of new problems. The filter house inspection should ensure that the clean side of the filter house is completely free of such contaminants.
